INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Today is Palm Sunday!
It is so named because when Jesus entered Jerusalem for what would be the last time, the crowds lined the roadway and waved palm branches…(Luke 19:28-40)
This morning, I would like to move beyond His triumphal entry, to the CROSS! And do our best to consider the question: Why did Jesus have to die? Why was His death necessary? Couldn’t God have achieved salvation some other way?
The ANSWER is both simple and complex!
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,
Before we consider the passage just read, let’s go to the Book of Hebrews to see, first:
I. The Death of Jesus was ACCORDING to the Will of God! (Hebrews 10:5-10)

The death of Jesus was no accident! It was a part of the plan and will of God.
Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’ ” When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
The POINT: The Triumphal Entry was not a prelude to FAILURE! In fact...

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,
W. MacDonald points out six features of His sufferings:
1. It was EXPIATORY (atoning) – “For Christ suffered once for sins…”
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
As the song, “How Deep the Father’s Love For Us,” says, “It was my sin that held Him there...”
2. It was ETERNALLY EFFECTUAL – “…once for all”
he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
3. It was SUBSTITUTIONARY – “…the righteous for the unrighteous”
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
4. It was RECONCILING – “…that he might (ἵνα NAS, ‘so that’) bring us to God”
Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.
in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.
5. It was VIOLENT – “…being put to death in the flesh”
6. It was climaxed by the RESURRECTION – “…but made alive in the Spirit”
concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
